Murchison Chair of Free Enterprise Finals:
- Mark Melliar-Smith (Panel Moderator) - Dr. Melliar-Smith is the Chief Operating Officer for Molecular Imprints, a start-up company that develops and manufactures step and flash imprint lithography tools. Prior to joining Molecular Imprints, Mark was a Venture Partner with Austin Ventures (2002-2003), and before that he was the President and CEO of SEMATECH (1997 to 2001) and the Chief Technical Officer for Lucent Technologies Microelectronics, the forerunner of Agere Systems.
- Mark Barry - Mark is Director, of Microsoft's US VC & Emerging Business group. He is part of Microsoft's software strategy team and is responsible for the unit's relationship with venture capitalists. Mr. Barry introduces venture firms and their portfolio companies to Microsoft's software strategy and shares views on emerging technologies and markets. Previously in Microsoft, Mr. Barry held several executive positions in enterprise sales, consulting and support services.
- John Bosch - John has founded 10 (mostly high-tech) companies under the TyRex Group, Ltd. and Cedar Creek Companies umbrellas that are successfully operating today. John's true business passion lies in assisting Professional Entrepreneurs in their entrepreneurial education and with their initial business development phases. To that end, John co-founded the TyRex Learning Foundation (TLF), headquartered on the campus of Texas A&M University within the Technology Commercialization Center.
- Mike Maples - A co-founder of Motive, Mike serves as the Chief Marketing and Strategy Officer. He is tasked with the responsibility of driving Motive's market, product and technology strategies to support the company's global sales initiatives. Mr. Maples experience centers on market strategy, entry and management in the software industry. Before co-founding Motive, he spent three years at Tivoli Systems, most recently as Director of Product Marketing.
- Dale Tibodeau - Dale is currently in Hewlett Packard's Information Technology Group as a Business/IT Consultant focusing on programs/projects that will help the business improve their bottom line and operations. He has held a number of positions within Texas Instruments, Compaq Computer Corporation, and Hewlett Packard Company with significant program/project management responsibilities including Commodity Manager for PCA's in Procurement and Planning Manager.
- Jimmy Treybig - Jimmy is a venture partner with New Enterprise Associates (NEA), one of the largest and oldest early round, venture capital firms in the USA. He is the Chairman of WholeSecurity and Clearcommerce and on the board of MotionComputing and VIEO. Jimmy was the founder and CEO of Tandem Computers for 22 years in its growth to $2+ billion in revenues. He received the Entrepreneur of the Year awards from both Stanford Graduate School of Business and Harvard Graduate School of Business.
College of Engineering Semi-Final Round:
- Eric Schieck (Panel Moderator) - Eric is the South Central US Area Sales Manager for AMD's embedded microprocessor product line. He is a UT Austin electrical engineering alum who has a passion for helping students become entrepreneurs and to learn what is needed to develop creative products that meet real needs. Because of this passion he was one of two students that founded the Technology Entrepreneurial Society and was one of the creators of I2P®.
- Scott Evans - Scott and his partner, Donnie Vanelli are the founders of Advanced Laser Materials, Inc. The company grew from their involvement in the UT Austin Technology Entrepreneurial Society and the Idea to Product® Competition. They were the University's team in the first International I2P® last fall. Since then the company has been formed and have obtained an intellectual property license from The University of Texas at Austin.
- Jack Hart - As Assistant Chairman, Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, Jack supports the Chairman in attaining the goals of the Department and also serves as the Department's Industry Liaison. While at the CIA, Jack was instrumental in the development and application of techniques used for the capabilities assessment of foreign weapon systems. In 1995, he joined Arrowsmith Technologies in Austin as a Program Director.
- Phong Le - As Director, Phong is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of NTEC's facility, technology, and financial activities, and is also the primary advisor to Program Companies for funding and capitalization. In 1991, Phong co-founded and was CEO of CREOTEC, a multimedia company offering products and services in the areas of training, virtual reality simulations, edutainment, informational kiosk, job performance improvement, and point of sale/point of interest.
- Steve Wagh - Steve offers his leadership and advice to many startup companies in the Central Texas area through his new company, National Investment Market. In 1984, he co-founded Brown-Wagh Publishing which introduced and marketed over 100 leading-edge software and hardware products. Some major hits included PrintMaster™, which became a leader in the low-end desktop publishing market, and Sound Blaster™, which became the major breakout product for multimedia applications.
Technology Entrepreneurship Society Semi-Final Round:
- Norman Schumaker (Panel Moderator) - Dr. Schumaker is the Chairman, CEO, and President of Molecular Imprints and is also President and CEO of FOReTEL Associates, Ltd. Dr. Schumaker founded EMCORE Corporation in 1984 and led the Company as Chairman, CEO and President until December 1996 when the Company finalized its IPO. Prior to EMCORE he managed the New Materials and Technology Group at AT&T Bell Laboratories, which developed LED and laser technology for telecommunications and displays.
- Terrence Brown - Dr. Terrence Brown is an educator, writer, researcher, consultant, and lecturer on creating value. Dr. Brown is the former Dean of Stockholm School of Entrepreneurship and is currently an Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the Royal Institute of Technology. He was the past Director of Research for the Association of the Electronic Auction Industry.
- Dewey Liccioni - Mr. Liccioni is the Associate Vice Chancellor for Strategic Programs for the Agriculture Program of The Texas A&M University System. At Texas A&M University, Mr. Liccioni has been instrumental in establishing several major initiatives including: the AM Fund, a venture capital fund, in which The Texas A&M University System is a major partner and the Technology Licensing Office of The Texas A&M University System.
- Steve Marcie - Steve Marcie is co-founder and chief strategy officer for Tonic Software, Inc. -- the leading provider of web application management solutions to large enterprises. Prior to joining Tonic Software, Steve co-founded Tivoli Systems where he was instrumental in growing the company from three employees through a very successful IPO, and on to be a division of IBM.
- Steve Sprinkle - Steve, along with several other lawyers, founded Sprinkle IP Law Group in June 2004 to provide a focused intellectual property service. Sprinkle IP Law Group concentrates on two primary areas of patent law: 1) obtaining patents and managing patent portfolios and 2) generating a return on his client's patent portfolio investment, using a "licensing-first" approach. Previously, Steve was the partner in charge of the intellectual property section in the Austin office of Gray Cary Ware & Freidenrich.
McCombs School of Business Challenge Judges:
- Charles Shields (Panel Moderator)- Charles Shields has 25 years of business experience advising senior management of major international corporations, health care organizations, foreign governments and The World Bank. He currently works as an advisor and interim executive in high tech and health care start up operations.
- Gary Cadenhead - Dr. Cadenhead is a Senior Lecturer in Entrepreneurship and Associate Director of the Kelleher Center for Entrepreneurship in the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin. He is Director of the MOOT CORP® Program, President of the MOOT CORP® Foundation and Director of the MOOT CORP® Pontoon Fund. Currently, he serves as Chairman of the Board of Schlotzsky's Inc.
- John Dickson - John Dickson is a partner at Denim Group, Ltd. In this capacity, he is responsible for helping build Denim Group by providing leadership in the business development, marketing, strategy areas, and practice management areas. Before joining Denim Group with Dan Cornell and Sheridan Chambers, John held numerous leadership positions at SecureLogix Corporation, including Regional Vice President of International Operations and Director, Consulting.
- Bob Martin - Bob Martin is the Chief Executive Officer of JumpStart Partners, Inc. a merchant banking firm specializing in mergers, acquisitions, and corporate change allowing companies to achieve their growth objectives. Prior, he was the Vice-President of Sales & Marketing for MagRabbit - an Austin-based leader in logistics and customer care. He previously was the Director of E-commerce at Trilogy Software, an enterprise software company.
- Dennis Wilson - Dr. Wilson is co-founder of Nanotechnologies and co-inventor of the company's proprietary process. Dr. Wilson also has four years of technology management experience as founder and President of Applied Sciences, Inc. and five years as CEO and more recently CTO of Nanotechnologies, Inc. He also served for three years as Director of Special Projects at the Institute for Advanced Technology where he was responsible for high-risk / high-pay-off research in hypervelocity physics. He is also a technical advisor to the President's Council of Advisor for Science and Technology.
