MicroDynamo team to represent UT Austin at I2P™ International

Jul 14, 2005

The first place finalists of the 2005 Idea to Product™ (I2P™) UT Austin Competition, Thomas Pate and Moss Shimek, will represent UT Austin in the I2P™ International Competition November 4-5, 2005. They will compete against invited universities from Asia, Europe, and North America for $25,000 in prizes and a chance to enter the Global MOOTCORP® competition.

Mr. Pate and Mr. Shimek are graduate students in Mechanical Engineering and are the co-inventors of the MicroDynamo, an ultra-compact human-powered battery charger. The applications of their technology includes recharging cell phones, digital cameras, and providing energy to soldiers in the field with a simple cranking or pulling motion. The team is currently pursuing intellectual property protection for their invention and considering their options for funding taking the MicroDynamo to market.

The I2P™ Competitions are hosted by the Chair of Free Enterprise in the College of Engineering at UT Austin with coordination support from the student Technology Entrepreneurship Society.
